Today Jonathan spoke to us about exile – a theme that runs throughout the Old Testament, either as a warning or as a lived experience. After they entered the Promised Land, God’s people were always aware that exile would follow their departure from God’s law; but its purpose was not primarily for punishment, but to turn the people back to God. Today the same choice faces all of us – exile from God, or return to God. But this time the return from exile does not require a long and arduous journey, but a simple turning towards Jesus, the one who has opened the way back for everyone.
