Today’s reflection comes from Roger Street – thank you, Roger.

Some years ago I went with my friend Derek to his house in France to spend a week repairing the roof of his barn. We stayed with a mutual friend, Tim, in his house in the next village up, Villiers-les-Bois. One evening we were invited to dinner with a friend of Tim’s in the village. By the way, Villiers-les-Bois makes Little Walden appear to be a thriving metropolis. Tim left for home at about midnight and we followed at about 3.
As we left the courtyard, our host closed the doors and switched off all the lights! It was pitch black! You literally could not see your hand in front of your face and here we had to make our way to the end of a relatively strange village. As we staggered, no, I mean as we crept our way along hugging the walls, we knew that somewhere ahead round the bend was the house we were staying in.
As we got to the bend, all changed! Tim had place a lighted lantern on the pavement and all was well. We strode the rest of the way, confident and fearless. Light has the effect on you. Tim had anticipated our problem and placed a lighted lamp in a strategic position.
John in the first 13 verses of his Gospel mentions ‘light’. God is aware of our deepest needs and has sent us light. Jesus the light coming into the world and nothing could put it out. In these dark times let us take courage and confidence, Jesus is our light and if we follow him we shall arrive home!
